Dear Colleagues,

PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week (PANAW), February 6-12, marks a milestone celebration of 25 years recognizing and celebrating our specialty nurses! The theme, “PeriAnesthesia Nurses: A Vital Role in Patient Care” demonstrates the importance of perianesthesia nursing and our practice. Nationally, you collectively care for millions of patients, spanning all ages and populations, from the critically ill geriatric inpatient, to the pediatric outpatient. You are committed to comprehensive knowledge and competencies, grounded in perianesthesia-specific scientific theory. You have a profound impact on pre- and post-surgical and procedural experiences, for our patients, their families, our peers, colleagues, students, and each other. You advocate for quality, patient safety and outcomes. Your assessments and interventions assure patients’ best possible future. You are a vital lifeline in compassionate caring and clinical competence.

On behalf of the ASPAN Board of Directors and the ASPAN National Office staff, I applaud your dedication and commitment. Thank you for being BEACONS OF CHANGE and for FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE of our patients and your practice. I know I speak for us all in celebrating YOU and your VITAL ROLE IN PATIENT CARE! Happy PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week!

January 11, 2012

Dear ASPAN colleagues,

The purpose of this letter is to invite you to assist ASPAN as a Host/Hostess at the 31st National Conference in Orlando, Florida on April 15-19, 2012.

If you are planning to attend the conference, ASPAN needs your support to make the conference the best one to date. Hosts/Hostesses play a critical role in the success of the conference. Duties of the Hosts/Hostesses include: staffing of the registration booth, collection of tickets for ticketed events, assisting at the evening sessions, providing directions within the conference area, facilitating seating in the sessions, distributing hand-outs and collection of questions from the audience. If an event such as the CPAN/CAPA Lunch has an additional fee, you must be registered for it to be selected.

Please review your conference brochure along with any other plans you might have to determine the times you are available to serve as a Host/Hostess. Complete the enclosed form and return by mail to Patricia Legg, 2146 Bills Drive, Jacksonville, Florida, 32210. If you wish, you can respond via email with your selections by date, time, and specific session/event. Please e-mail Pat Legg at leggpc@att.net. The deadline is February 17, 2012.

All efforts will be made to place you in the time frame and sessions you select. A first-come, first served selection method will be employed should there be more volunteers than spots available for a given time slot. If you also wish to serve as a moderator, please choose separate sessions to serve as a Host/Hostess. Contact Sheri Bowell, Moderator Coordinator, at 253-517-3988 or sheri.rn.capa@comcast.net to volunteer to moderate a session(s).

Please plan to attend the Host/Hostess orientation on Saturday, April 14th from 3:15-4:15pm or Sunday, April 15th from 4:00-5:00pm. If you are unable to be there, check in after arrival at the Host/Hostess desk during daytime conference hours to receive instructions and your apron.

Please review the brochure and times you are available to be a Host/Hostess and notify me as soon as possible by sending the completed form back to me. The assignments will be completed and you will be notified by March 16, 2012 of your assigned times. To volunteer you must be an active or retired member of ASPAN and have registered for the conference.

Thank you for supporting this recruitment effort. I look forward to seeing all of you in April at ASPAN’s 31th National Conference in Sunny Orlando, “the City Beautiful”.

Sincerely yours,

January 24, 2012

Dear ASPAN Colleagues,

I would like to invite you to consider serving as a session moderator during the upcoming National Conference in Orlando, FL, April 15-19, 2012.

Component leaders, past and present, as well as other component members who are comfortable using a microphone and at ease introducing speakers, are needed to serve as session moderators. Moderators are needed for Pre-Conference sessions, Saturday, April 14 and each educational session including Monday afternoon April 16; Tuesday, April 17; Wednesday, April 18; and the Post-Conference offering on Thursday, April 19. The duties of the moderators include: introducing speakers and keeping the session on time. Pass this letter and copies of the Moderator Willingness-to-Serve Form to others within your component, and any other colleagues planning to attend the conference who you think would be interested in serving as a moderator. Moderating is fun and an important part of the conference.

Please review your time and volunteer commitments and the educational sessions found in the 2012 National Conference brochure. Choose a session (or better yet, several sessions) which you would be willing to moderate. Complete the attached form indicating your selections, including the date, time, session number and title to: sheri.rn.capa@comcast.net. If you also wish to serve as a Host/Hostess, please choose separate sessions to serve as a moderator. Contact Pat Legg, Hostess Coordinator, at 904-868-1392 or leggpc@att.net to volunteer for sessions to Host/Hostess.

Every effort will be made to place you in the session(s) of your choice, based on a first come, first served basis. If you are willing to moderate a session other than your first choice option, please indicate that on the Moderator Willingness-to-Serve form. You will be notified of your session assignment by email. A moderator orientation letter and detailed instructions will be included with your assignment(s). Make plans to attend the Moderator Orientation session at 4:30-5:30pm on Saturday, April 14.

Please return your completed form to me as soon as possible. The final date for returning your willingness-to- serve form is February 17th. Assignments will be completed and notification sent to each volunteer moderator by March 17, 2012.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing you at ASPAN’s 31st National Conference in Orlando!

Sincerely,

The new officers of District 4 want to wish you a Happy New Year.
We hope you all had a wonderful, restful, holiday.

An update on the festivities in December:
We made $350 at our fundraiser at Fine and Funky but more importantly we had fun with each other and even made dents in our Christmas shopping.
We also had a winner of the quilt!
Barb Comstock’s own son won the drawing.
We made $160 profit on that fundraiser (quilt cost was $227).

Don’t forget to sign up for the upcoming ASPAN educational offerring on Feb 4.

And just a reminder that your current officers would love to hear from you with any ideas for support, education or get-togethers:
President Barbara Watts: watts297@hotmail.com
Vice Pres Gail Stout: gailstoutrn@gmail.com
Secretary Sherry MacNamara: sherkmac@yahoo.com
Treasurer Jessica Johnson: lil_bucket24@yahoo.com

Also if you are planning on attending ASPAN conference this April let Barb Watts know. She would like to plan a get-together in Orlando!!

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce that ASPAN has adopted a new corporate logo, which will become effective January 1, 2012. A copy of the new logo appears at the bottom of this email.

Work on this project has been ongoing for several months now. We started by reviewing the Society’s history, the history of the current logo, and some of the ideals that logo was intended to convey.

Based upon that history and those ideals, we then began coming up with design concepts to test among a sample of our members. We were reminded of many things (and learned several others) along the way, including:

ASPAN members have a very strong attachment to the image of an aspen leaf.

ASPAN members wanted to see veins in the leaf, which some associate with the idea of networking and others connect with perianesthesia practice.

ASPAN members love the color dark green, and they also love the color dark blue. But they responded most favorably when the two colors were used together.

A significant percentage of our members wanted our acronym, ASPAN, to be in capital letters.

All of this feedback–and all of the original ideals–have been incorporated into the new ASPAN logo, which is one reason we welcome the new design with such enthusiasm. Further, the new logo provides an extraordinary opportunity to promote our Society and our practice as consistently and effectively as possible. For instance, the Society’s name is now more prominent, and the acronym by which we are known, ASPAN, is now included within the design.

The new logo will begin appearing on a broad variety of promotional materials (e.g., brochures, website) and standard communications (e.g., letters and email blasts) beginning in January.

Lastly, members can rest assured that our historic logo will not entirely disappear but instead become the Society’s Official Seal/Legacy Logo. It will be reserved for more critical/historic documents (e.g., certificates, individual awards, legal documents, the President’s pin) to indicate their significance and authenticity. The process of identifying those select documents is already underway.

I invite all members of the ASPAN community to join me in supporting the introduction of our new logo, which will be unveiled to the public later this year. The new logo will then begin appearing in ASPAN promotional materials and standard communications in January. For additional information, please contact ASPAN’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Doug Hanisch, atdhanisch@aspan.org or 877.737.9696, ext. 15.

Sincerely,
